Rainbows and Honey Bees

Spring is officially here. At General Hydroponics headquarters that means rainbows and wildflowers.

This lovely yellow flower is a type of sorrel, commonly called Sour Grass. I can’t believe I got that shot of the bee in mid flight, with its little tongue sticking out!

The High Stakes Crime of Smuggling Grape Clones

General Hydroponics is based in the heart of the Sonoma County wine county. It’s surrounded by endless rows of vineyards whose wine is an extremely valuable crop in California. In Napa County, our neighbor to the east, a quarantine has been put into place to stop the spread of the European grapevine moth.
The European [...]

Essential Tools: Seedling Heat Mat

Click on the above chart to view a larger version.
If you are getting seeds going, there’s no better tool for keeping young plants warm and cozy during late winter than a seedling heat mat. I use one under each tray of Rapid Rooters that I start, and I don’t think my baby plants would live [...]

Back to School at UC Davis…

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of traveling over to the University of California Davis, with some others from the GH Family.  It was a great chance to get back to the college scene that I miss so dearly!
The afternoon began with an introductory lecture about hydroponics given by Dr. Heiner Leith, one [...]

Indoor Hydroponic Strawberry Video

Urban Hydroponics Growers Union is amazing. Each blogger on their site is an experienced grower, and Charles, aka Chuckie Dan, has even been seen around the GrowGH blog! This video showing their strawberry setup is effing awesome. They share their tricks for troubleshooting the Aeroflow and also show the transplanting process. Can’t wait to see [...]

Blossoming Trees in the Greenhouse

The greenhouse right now is filled with flowers. Remember the fruit trees that are waiting for transplanting? Many of them are currently in full bloom. I took some really crazy closeup shots, and it just blows my mind how each flower is so different from the next, yet so the same.

Oyster Mushrooms Growing in the GH Kitchen

There’s always something interesting growing at Gen Hydro, and so I wasn’t too surprised to wander into the office kitchen and find these oyster mushrooms on the counter. It’s an inoculated substrate and all it needs to throw off one or two rounds of delicious ‘shrooms is moisture.

This is the second round that has bloomed [...]

How to Crave Kale

Right now we have a crop of dark, leafy green kale going nuts in the greenhouse. It’s a power veggie, packed with vitamins and minerals. Most people know that it’s super nutritious, but did you know that vegetables grown with General Hydroponics nutrients actually have more nutrition than most soil grown crops? This is due [...]

Don’t Reinvent the Wheel!

In our time of emerging technology in Hydroponics, it is easy to get overwhelmed.   I talk to a lot of people that are constantly searching for “IT”.  Call this a friendly reminder to not get caught up in all the hype.  All you really need is a plant, and an ability to care.

This is a [...]
