Make: Magazine Garden Controller Project
I’m getting ready to attend the Maker Faire at the fairgrounds in San Mateo this weekend. The event is a massive DIY festival with robots, explosions, and things like the world’s largest tesla coil. One big sensation from the Maker Faire was the Botanicalls plant twitter system that I recently blogged about. I also met a hydroponics artist that I also featured here on the blog.
The event is sponsored by Make: Magazine, and in their current issue,Vol.18, one of their featured projects is a Garduino- A garden arduino controller. An arduino is a programable micro controller that senses input from the outside world. It’s not as complicated as you might think, and can be built my anyone with modest electronic skills. The project showcases an indoor garden that’s lighting and irrigation systems are fully automated. As a bonus, this issue also features a DIY vermicompost system and a wood fired hot tub!

I’m an electronics/computer guy myself, lately building a powerful LED light for our plants. To a certain degree I like the automation that is possible, even necessary, e.g. a timer for the light. But I really like to take care of my plants, feed them, thats my zen.
