Green Path Garden Supply
Today I’d like to introduce you to Green Path Garden Supply, in Northboro, MA. The store seems to be a perfect place to shop for hydro and organics, indoor and outdoor alike. I love the fact that the owner Tom includes lawn care and traditional gardening products in the mix with hydroponics. Green Path Garden Supply [...]

Flowers are starting to bloom
There are tons of flowers popping up everywhere. These are just part of the lovely landscape all around the offices and warehouse.
Edited to add two more shots, one of the farmlab and greenhouses, and one overlooking the Gallo Vineyards behind our warehouse. The second one shows the Laguna de Santa Rosa wetlands in the distance.

Purple Peppers
One of the ebb and flow trays that we use for testing new formulas is filled with purple pepper plants. I love the purple stripes on the stems of the plants. I’ve always noticed how the GenHydro nutrients really enhance the natural colors that some plants are genetically destined to produce.

Poster Flashback
There’s quite a collection of posters around the office. These are made and given to distributors and stores, and serve as a colorful promotion for GH.
The cast of characters in SubCulture-B.
The periodic table.
This one was shot before they switched the drys into pouches.
LoL cats made it into a parody ad for the bulletin board.

The New WaterPOWER Pump
In the last year, General Hydroponics has introduced new pumps, the WaterPOWER pump 85 and WaterPOWER 120. These new pumps have a lower failure rate and are one of the most dependable pumps on the market.
One of the greatest improvements is the superior impeller design. The new impeller is more beefy and and has more reliable [...]

Hydroponic Schematic
I was looking for books about growing hydro. Many titles are out dated, are crop specific, or don’t have the information I’m looking for. But I came across a book by a UK author, called “Hydroponics-Indoor Horticulture” by Jeffery Winterborne. It has a great diagram that resonates to me like a schematic. I love the [...]

Day one with the Aerogarden
Aerogarden sent us a setup to check out, and today our sales rep Ivan set it up in the office kitchen. I posted about the Aerogarden a while back, with some links to recipes using General Hydroponics nutrients. You better believe we are going to modify this baby to do our bidding. But first, we [...]

This morning I want to share treeblog.co.uk. It’s a great blog all about, you guessed it, trees.
That shot is of a blossoming plum tree behind the greenhouses.

Mychorrizal Tattoo
On Friday I went to lunch and ran into TexJeff, a local landscape architect. He was off to plant some fruit trees, and we chatted about gophers and soil amendments. He is really into mychorriza, and as a landscape architect, that’s a good thing. In fact, when he was considering getting a tattoo he no [...]

Watch our bottling process
Today I am sharing a behind the scenes view of the bottling equipment at General Hydroponics. We ship massive amounts of nutrients, and this equipment makes the process swift and efficient. In a very short period of time, the bottles are filled, capped and labeled. Today they were doing 1 gallon Flora Bloom bottles. Mesmerizing.

Action on the farm
Today the winter crop harvest begins. We have had weird, warm and dry weather here in Sebastopol this winter. And because of that, and who knows what else, the produce lacks the luster it would need to make it to market. Instead, the greens will be harvested for everyone here to eat, and the rest [...]

What’s your media blend?
Yesterday’s post on expanded clay pebbles got me thinking about how there are endless combinations of growing media. In my ebb and flow setup, I use perlite and coco fibers. I began with a really wet mix, of mostly coco, with a few handfulls of perlite. I had zero experience, and so I experimented tons. Using a wetter mix [...]

Soilless saffron
Remember way back in November, when I started some bulbs in coco fibers? Well, the crocus are finally blooming! What makes crocus so awesome is not just it’s beauty. The stigma from crocus are the delicous and valuable spice that is saffron. Paella anyone??

What does it do Wednesday: Expanded Clay Pebbles
When you purchase a complete hydro system from GH, it comes with a chosen media. We include expanded clay pebbles. They are marble sized balls of clay, and they are a really unique growing media. Growers love them because they have a good balance between air and moisture, they are sustainable, and easy to use. [...]

GH packaging is getting some press!
The packaging industry is big business. In fact, Lawrence Brooke, his daughter Kristina and Keith Evans the Operations Manager, flew down to LA for a packaging trade show last week. They are always looking for ways to improve our products. And changing packaging can have a major impact on production over here. By switching the [...]

Hydroponic Valerian at GHE
Valerian( Valeriana officinalis) is one of my favorite medicinal herbs. It grows quite tall and is covered with white, fluffy blooms. They have a heavenly scent in the evening time, and the seed pod is also very pretty. For these reasons it has long been cultivated around the world.
I decided to spotlight valerian when I [...]

Growing Gardens in Portland Oregon
I just got a neat link from a reader in Portland. She sent me to Growing Gardens, the website of an amazing collective of gardeners doing outreach in their community. They work with school children, urban organics, and even touch on cooking and preserving homegrown food. Visit their site for more inspiration, and if you [...]

Tom Alexander and Growing Edge
Growing Edge, the original industry magazine, ceased printing at the beginning of 2009, much to its readers dismay. But print media is on the way out, the internet is filling the space, and it seems to be an unavoidable sign of the times. Thus, Growing Edge is being reincarnated into Growingedge.com, featuring ecology, gardening, hydroponics, [...]
