Oyster Mushrooms in Humboldt

It’s a food weekend, where here in NorCal we celebrate with the best wines, the best companions and the best of the harvest. I thought I would share with you a bounty of mushrooms. They were grown by Tom Gronek from Let it Grow in Arcata and he grew them from scratch, in an all cotton General Hydroponics grain bag. I think they are just awesome. Tom also creates kits of mycological supplies, so that you to can cultivate your own fungus. He sells them at Let it Grow, and all the proceeds benefit the non-profit, Wounded Planet. The focus at Wounded Planet is on mycoremdiation techniques. Very Cool.

The mushrooms shown are white oyster mushrooms, and they only took 3 days to grow! Besides the ones shown, he grows blue, pink and yellow oysters, reishi mushrooms, shitake, lion’s mane and countless other types. He recomends cooking them sauteed in butter, and says his wife has a great recipe where she uses them to make stuffed peppers. And he reminds us that they are medicinal to eat on several levels. Cheers for the humble home grown mushroom. Peace.

I have talked to Paul Stamets on a couple of occasions about how mycology are a solution for a myriad of the worlds ecological problems.

Those are beautiful specimens!
