Jessica’s Office Garden

Our sales rep Jessica Lilga is frequently mentioned here; she is a wealth of experience and knowledge. It’s always fun to stop in her office to learn about all the real product feedback that she receives from stores and growers. One of the other reasons I like to visit her desk is to check in on her bookshelf garden.

Jessica cleverly hung a Hydrofarm light on her shelves and has created an ideal environment for her small collection of carnivourous plants, as well as a very vital mint plant.

Two of the carnivorous plants are thriving in small bog. It is a shallow amount of water sitting in a recycled plastic tray. They just love the stagnant water and algae.

The mint plant is in a coco basket, and she recently cut it back. The old growth of the mint that died has harbored fruit flies which in turn are food for the carnivorous plants. It is so vigorous that it is even sprouting out the sides of the coco basket.

The carnivorous plants are so fascinating. They rely on the meat of insects instead of nutrients from soil. And the flowers that they produce are very unique as well. I love the way the paddle-like leaf of this one is covered in beautiful tiny red hairs.

Jessica’s garden is the perfect inspiration for small scale decorative indoor gardens. Every office needs one!

I don’t have an office, but if I did, I would love to have a tiny garden like this. What size light is that? Is it a T5 fluoro?

That mint looks great in the coco basket. I use them with straight up potting soil and they air-prune the roots, leading to lateral root growth. I can typically grow larger plants that would be rootbound in 2″ smaller pots.
