Living Walls

Earlier in the week I posted about our European counterpart, GHE. While I was checking out their in-depth website, I found their information on Vegetal Walls. In California we call them Living Walls. It’s a cutting edge concept that combines plants and architecture to create a lush vertical landscape. Here is a photo from the Millennial Village in London, and also a close up of the roots and media of another living wall.

These walls are stunningly beautiful. Yet besides aesthetics, they provide numerous benefits to the gardener. First, they clean the air quite efficently, and second, they allow for much greater use of space than conventional plantings. Read more about the benefits of living walls here at Sky Gardens. Also check out this article from the Times Online. And be sure to check back here for more information. I’m so inspired right now that I intend to create a living wall myself, and will be sure to document the process for this blog. And if YOU have a living wall, or have a favorite living wall, please post links and photos in the comments section.

We had a shady brick wall that was usually moist from rain runoff. We created a living wall by putting moss in a food processor and putting it in a spray bottle.

This is great, I hope to do something of that magnitude some day.

I love the way that moss looks growing in the cracks of a wall, or in-between pavers on a patio. Did you know you can add equal parts beer to the moss when you blend it up to give it a hand in getting established?
