Jesse’s Giant Veggie Contest
At the GH FarmLab, Jesse has been growing a couple awesome giant pumpkins. The one in the photo below is currently 117 inches around, and getting bigger!

He planted seeds specifically bred to be gigantic and make massive veggies. The seeds were germinated in late May, and the plants went into the ground the second week of June. To get them going big, he pinched every flower off the vine, letting the plant focus its energy and fruit producing forces on just one blossom. The fruit set thee weeks or so after that. The pumpkin rests on a bed of sand, and spends time covered from the sun, to prevent early ripening. Other than that, it’s basically just feed and water, water and feed. Jesse uses our Flora Nova Series. It’s simple, and it works! He also applies SubCulture M, the new root innoculant with mycorrhizal fungi.

Growing giant produce is nothing new. And with new breeds in production, its easy to get started yourself. Check out one of our myspace friends and his massive sunflowers. They hold world records, and he sells seeds too! myspace.com/gardenmonster
So, to kick off the blog and celebrate the beginning of the harvest season, GH is having a giant vegetable contest. We want to see what’s in your garden. Do you have a gigantic zucchini? The phatest tomato? The tallest flowers ever? Post your photos in the comments section and we will choose a winner. The winner will receive a prize package that includes the nutrients Jesse used to produce his pumpkins. The contest ends October 31st, so start feeding your crop.

Hi Jeff! The best way to post an image is to host it on a site like flickr or photobucket. Then copy and paste the url right into your comment. If you would like us to host the photo, send an email to blog@genhydro.com and we will get you taken care of! I can’t wait to see what you have grown!

How much did that pumpkin weigh?
Nice mater there Jeff!!
Wish I would have caught this contest earlier. I might have that tomato and pumpkin beat.
This past season I took the Ohio State record for heaviest tomato which weighed in at 4.48 pounds. I also broke my previous personal best in Giant pumpkin growing with a pumpkin which weighed in at 823 pounds. The circumference at seasons end was 160 inches. The pumpkin is a part of a breeding project I am working on and was grown off of the 1306 Jutras. Joe Jutras is the curent World Record holder at 1689 pounds. I would love to team up with General hydroponics to grow the world’s largest hydroponic pumpkin. I have one successful experiment with that under my belt and am ready to give it my best shot.
Hope the pictures work:

The pumpkin and tomato were both grown outdoors in the garden. I have my soil tested in the fall and then ammend accordingly. I till in LOTS of compost and organic matter at that time and then plant a cover crop of winter rye. Test again in the spring and make minor adjustments. I use granular mycorrhizal fungi at planting, then aerobically brewed compost tea to jump start the beneficials. During the season I foliar using liquid fish, humic acid, kelp and compost tea. I’d love to be the first to grow a 1000 lb. pumpkin hydroponically. I may give it a shot this season in my greenhouse.

We have a 5 pound zucchini and were wondering what the record is. Do you know? It’s also about 18″ long, and looks great.

Wow – that is one impressive pumpkin. I love the shading construction too. Any chance Jesse could get some of those seeds up to us here on Vancouver Island?
